Elegant Simplicity: Master Li's Mastery of Official and Regular Scripts

Master Li is well-versed in seal, official, and regular scripts, with a particular mastery of official and regular calligraphy. He advocates the "mutual complementarity of regular and official scripts." His official script style draws inspiration from the archaic uprightness of the Zhang Qian Stele, the dignified elegance of the Yiying Stele, the graceful charm of the Cao Quan Stele, the upright serenity of the Shi Chen Stele, the vigorous conciseness of the Li Qi Stele, the bold and uninhibited Ode to Shimen, and the majestic solemnity of Ode to Xixia Pathway, combined with the methodical brushwork of regular script.

In the process of copying stele inscriptions, Master Li meticulously studies and absorbs their essence, tirelessly exploring new paths of emulating the ancients while innovating. His profound understanding of theories such as "Forceful strokes should harmonize strength and gentleness, embodying vigor within elegance, and conveying vigor within gracefulness..." is evident in his works.

Master Li's calligraphic pieces are characterized by rigorous composition, spacious layouts, standardized character structures, dexterous brushwork, and harmonious ink tonality. His works exude an aura of refinement and the elegant charm reminiscent of the Jin Dynasty masters. Through years of assimilation, honing, and cultivation, he has achieved a unique style, "internalizing the ancient methods while infusing them with new ideas, creating novel approaches while preserving the essence of antiquity, molding myriad forms, and encompassing the strengths of many."

Serene Composure: Master Li's Calligraphic Journey

In his calligraphic journey, Master Li has received in-person guidance and online instruction from numerous renowned calligraphers, including Li Dexin, Vice President of the China National Academy of Classical Learning and Calligraphy and a National First-Class Artist; Cai Qingfeng, a senior calligrapher from the Hong Kong Cultural Department and a charitable artist; and Zhu Yongan, a famous calligrapher from Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province.

Master Li firmly believes in the importance of emulating ancient masters. This emulation involves inheriting and synthesizing their principles and capturing their essence. In his practice, he has drawn insights from the calligraphy of Huang Tingjian, one of the "Four Masters of the Song Dynasty." He recognizes that initially imitating the forms is the beginner's stage, then discovering and applying the underlying principles is the intermediate stage, and ultimately comprehending the " Heaven and Man Are United as One" spirit is the advanced stage. These three stages represent the progression from the "selfless realm" to the "self-aware realm," and finally to the "true self realm," harmonizing "learning" and "mastery."

Master Li advocates that the ideal artistic effect in calligraphy should achieve "profound thought, artistic excellence, and meticulous craftsmanship," allowing it to truly radiate a contemporary spiritual brilliance. The calligrapher should cultivate a calm and focused mindset, progressing from the "selfless realm" to the "self-aware realm," and ultimately reaching the "true self realm" through diligent and meticulous practice. Only then can calligraphically study and creation be imbued with profound meaning and spiritual vitality.

While emulating ancient masters, Master Li also embraces the essence of contemporary art, including the official script works of renowned calligraphers like Liu Bingsen, which serve as models for his practice. Years of dedicated practice have allowed him to fuse the characteristics of various stele inscriptions into his official script, resulting in a style that is dignified and graceful, yet also bold and vigorous, exuding an uninhibited and powerful beauty. His brushwork flows like a boat gliding with the current, rarely exhibiting abrupt or exaggerated strokes. His calligraphy is calm and steady, elegant and restrained, with the inner chambers tightly controlled and the essence concealed within, embodying a noble grace rooted in ancient traditions while exuding a refined charm reminiscent of the moon and flowers. By harmonizing the steady dignity of clerical script with the methodical brushwork of regular script, his calligraphy achieves a smooth and flowing rhythm, with forceful yet graceful strokes and a luminous beauty. Quietly appreciated, the ink exudes a warm luster, the characters are vibrant and dynamic, and the overall effect is one of serene elegance combined with a refreshing and uninhibited spirit, aligning with contemporary aesthetic ideals.

Faintly, I still feel the innocence of youth,

Yet I have already become a man of nearly fourscore;

Cherishing the wonderful era we live in,

I shall devote my later years to acts of kindness.

In his retirement, Master Li has actively participated in various social welfare activities, including the creation of a civilized county, the development of a forest city, commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, celebrations of the 19th and 20th National Congresses, and national calligraphy and painting events for National Day.
